Pets and essential oils, part one.

Every week we get three or four questions asking us what essential oils to use when treating pets. All are excellent questions so over the next few weeks we will have a series of blogs with information, recipe's, other people's experiences and places to go for more information. At different times we will feature books, blogs and experiences. If you have any experiences, books or blogs that you would like to tell us about, please do so! We will happily share them with our RMO family.

Last week we were asked what to do for a dog with itching skin. First thing to determine with the dog is why his or her skin is itching. If it is due to fleas or ticks, then Bug Off would be a good idea.  This oil is helpful in getting rid of mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, etc. You can apply it by putting 1 or 2 drops around the collar area. Also along the back of the dog near the base of the spine. One of our RMO family, E.G., told us what she does for her dogs: "I use Lavender to ward of bugs and recently made a few cotton collars and put a few drops of Bug Off on them and it is working wonderfully and I don't have to use that nasty chemical stuff down their backs to ward off fleas and ticks!"

Other reasons for itchy skin can be a rash or an allergic reaction to something in the dog's environment, or even just really dry skin. So you should take a look at what type of shampoo you are using as well as what kind of triggers could be around the dog.

One customer applied a drop of Lavender on her dog's feet where she was licking and behind her ears where she was scratching. It seemed to give her some relief.

For a treatment, here is a recipe we found in the book Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell

Soothing Skin Essential Oil Blend
1/2 (15 ml) base oil (carrier oil)
2 drops Geranium
6 drops Rosewood
6 drops Lavender
2 drops Carrot Seed

Combine all ingredients, shake and store in a dark glass bottle. Use 2-4 drops of this blend to spot treat small areas of affected skin.

Rose, the Queen of Flowers

Roses are such lovely flowers! Rose Oil is the most beautiful and valuable of oils. A tremendous amount of work has to go into making it. The oil is pressed from the petals and it takes hundreds of roses to make one bottle of oil.

Blend of Rose is more affordable. A blend is when the therapeutic oil is mixed with a carrier oil. All of the properties are still the same. It just makes it easier to get the benefits of this lovely oil by providing a more affordable option for buying it. We have Rose oil blended  in the carrier oil F.C.O. (Fractionated Coconut Oil)

The main therapeutic properties of Rose oil are that it can help as an antidepressant and as an antiseptic. It can help in the treatment of many female reproductive issues such as PMS, menopause, regulation of periods and even can help with some fertility issues. (Avoid use in early pregnancy, however, especially if there is a history of miscarriage.) Rose can give you feelings of love and helps allay feelings of anxiety and fear. In fact, it has been called the "Queen of Flowers". It's no wonder the flower has been used for gifts of love for centuries!

Now, how to use it. We have some customers who mainly use it as a perfume. For that, it is better by far than any of the commercial scents. Rose can be mixed with any of the flower scents so you can try it with different ones like Lavender and see what works best for you.

As skin care, you can mix it into lotions and creams. Just mix 2-5 drops with a tablespoon of the lotion or cream of your choice. (Always try it on a small area of skin first to make sure you don't have any adverse reactions.)

You can make a room spray by adding 6 drops of Blend of Rose, 2 drops of Bergamot, and 2 drops of Lavender in a cup of water. Put in a spray bottle and spritz your room for a nice air freshener.

Another recipe to give you feelings of peace and love is to add 2 drops of Neroli,  4 drops of Blend of Rose, and 4 drops of Rosewood. You can use this one in a bath or in a diffuser.

We have a coupon for 10% off a bottle of Blend of Rose that is still good for the next week. It ends on midnight (MDT), April 30, 2012. So hurry and use it now and order your bottle of Blend of Rose!

And last of all, what recipes do you like to use? What do you like to do with Rose? Please share with us here. We always like to know.

Customer Letter: Using the Breakthrough Kit

At Rocky Mountain Oils, we always enjoy hearing the responses from our customers about how they use our oils and of their effectiveness. We would like to open up a new segment of our blog where we get to share these experiences with you. Our hope is that through these experiences and words of wisdom from our customers, that you will be able to find new uses and techniques when using your oils at home.

Today's letter comes from C. Jeanie Ballard from Integrative Healing Therapies. She used various oil blends found in our Breakthrough Oils Kit to get rid of a customers Hives. Below is her letter to us:

_______________________________________________________________

I had a client who came to me with a terrible case of hives. She had been through a series of medical tests but had not received the results. She was miserable and it seemed that the hives were spreading and getting worse for several weeks before she called me desperate for help. I felt guided to use the Breakthrough oils along with Healing Touch and BLU-e Intuitive Healing.

Below is the sequence.

1. I placed 6 drops of Aligning on each foot and held them for one minute to balance the energy in her system.

2. I rubbed 3 drops of Balance into my palms; then drew my palms through her auric field along the energy meridians on the sides of her body from the crown to her feet to harmonize and balance the energy centers of her body. (Observed several energetic releases -- body shifting and realigning)

3. I applied 2 drops of Love in the field just above her naval in a clockwise direction to allow for releasing and letting go of negative feelings.

4. I applied 2 drops of Love in the field over the heart to increase the frequency of unconditional love and to allow for joy. (Observed a huge physical release when my palms were over her heart).

5. I applied 2 drops of Present Moments on her Thymus to allow her be "in the NOW".

6. I applied 2 drops of Transformation over the liver to release any anger that may have been stored within the cells of the Liver. (I observed a large energetic release when my palms were over the Liver.)

7. I applied 1 drop of At Peace under the nose and 1 drop in the field above her naval to eliminate traumatic memory. (I observed an energetic release --her body rapidly jerked in the area of the liver.)

8. I applied 1 drop of Transition on the outer edge of each ear to encourage strength and optimism.

9. I applied 2 drops of Guardian on her crown and on her shoulders for protection.

10. I felt guided to finish the treatment with 3 drops of Aligning on the soles of her feet to seal in the frequencies of the oils used in the session.

My client reported that she had felt as though she had been in an altered state for most of the session--but noted that she experienced a mental and emotional shift and felt very relaxed and calm. She noted that she was experiencing a slightly sore throat (release of anger), which dissipated and cleared as I guided her through some deep breathing exercises. She also reported receiving clarity about the cause of the hives, which she addressed immediately after the session -- 5th Chakra --speaking one's truth.

I am pleased to report that the hives were greatly diminished the next day and completely gone on the day after that. When she received the allergy test results from her physician, the tests indicated that she had no allergies. She has not experienced another episode since that time.

Thank you for the therapeutic oils. I found them to be of a very high frequency and can attest to their effectiveness.

Warmly,

C. Ballard

"Black Cumin heals every disease except for death." --Prophet Mohammed

We have been asked several questions about Black Cumin essential oil. Like Lavender, it is an incredible oil because it helps in the treatment of many different issues. It helps ease respiratory, digestive, and endocrine. It also boosts the immune and circulatory systems. Some people even use it just to stimulate their energy level.

So, how to use it. First of all, it is GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) so it can be taken internally. Some people will mix 2-10 drops in a cup of green tea, hot water or some other beverage and drink it 3 times a day.

Rubbing into the bottoms of your feet is always a good way to get an essential oil into your system, as is diffusing it. You can mix Black Cumin with a carrier oil or use it neat (undiluted) and rub it into the troubled area, ie over your stomach for digestive issues, on chest or throat for respiratory issues, etc.

If you want to use it for treating skin conditions, mix several drops with a carrier oil like F.C.O., spread over area that needs treating. (Just test it on a small area of skin first to make sure you don't have any adverse reactions.) That same mix can also be used to help keep facial skin healthy.

These are a few things we like to do. How do you like to use Black Cumin oil? Please let us know!

It's spring! And the ants come marching one by one....

We have been enjoying the beautiful spring weather and all the flowers. The hard part, however, is that while there are bulbs waking up and the grass and trees are all waking up, so are other things. Like ants.

Now, I know the ants are necessary and I know we need them to help aerate and mix up the soil and things like that. However, I really don't like them coming into my house. But they are persistent and keep trying. So here are a few oils I use to discourage them.

The main ones that are great deterrents are Peppermint, Lavender, Citronella, Cinnamon, Basil, Eucalyptus, and Lemongrass. My favorite is to put Peppermint, Eucalyptus and Lavender oils in the areas I know the creepy crawlies are coming in. At Rocky Mountain Oils we also have a synergy named Bug Off made of Peppermint, Lavender, Citronella, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass and Thyme; many of the ones that are great for repelling the creepy crawlies.

Just use a few drops of each. Start with five and see how it does. You can put them on a cotton ball and stick it into the corners you know they are coming in or you can wipe them along the thresholds of doorways and places like that. You will need to refresh them every week or so. And they'll make your house smell lovely!

You can use a carrier oil to make them go further but you need to be careful which one you use. Olive oil will attract the ants in spite of the essential oils. Some people will use a mineral oil for a carrier oil on their floors.

One year I was using a lot of Peppermint and Eucalyptus, with a touch of Lemon, in my front doorway. We had a Fennel plant right next to the front door and it attracted a lot of wasps. I'm talking 20-30 wasps hovering around it all of the time. Never once did one of them come into my house.  Maybe they didn't like the scent of the oils. I'm not sure, but I was very happy they stayed out!

What do you like to use to keep the creepy-crawlies out?
